The Centre for Sustainable Fashion at the University of the Arts London has been focused for the last ten years ‘…on the pressing need to continue to build a transformed fashion system’ to affect change in an industry that needs to reduce its carbon footprint. Professor of Design, Sustainability & Fashion, Kate Fletcher, has been instrumental in “developing ‘slow fashion’ ideas,” see www.katefletcher.com. As I began WINK to science & art, LLC, the concept was developed with my first-hand knowledge of the impact the industry could have on the environment. Years of experience sourcing, producing and importing goods convinced me those methods would not be best for WINK. Our passion is about the health of our oceans so whenever possible we use sustainable methods; natural fabrics are purchased domestically, we pre-wash them to remove industrial agents and then make our garments locally, in small amounts. The result is that our environmental impact is much less than if we sourced internationally and this is something we feel really good about. WINK likes the work being done at the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and hope their ideas continue to take hold in the ever-evolving fashion industry.
